19 year-old British racing driver, Zak O’Sullivan has withdrawn from the remainder of the 2024 F2 season due to funding issues.
O’Sullivan this season graduated into F2 with ART GP and took a Sprint victory in Belgium, alongside a memorable Feature Race win in Monaco from 15th on the grid with a bold tyre strategy.
The Brit currently sits 13th in the standings with 59 points but funding issues has forced him to withdraw from the final three rounds of the season.
O’Sullivan himself took to X to make the announcement in which he thanked ART GP and Williams – of who he is an academy driver – for their support, but explained that budget issues has forced him to withdraw from the rest of season.
‘Firstly, I want to thank ART GP and Williams Racing for all of the support they have given me. This year we have had some incredible moments, multiple wins and a big highlight of winning the feature race in Monaco.
‘Unfortunately in our sport, there are more factors at play than just the stopwatch. The simple issue comes down to funding, I won’t be able to complete this F2 season with ART GP.
‘I’m gutted to not be able to show my talents for the rest of the year, but I want to say thank you to all of my sponsors, Williams Racing and all of the supporters who are alongside me during this journey.
‘Your support has been invaluable and I can’t wait to be able to drive for you and with you again soon.’
O’Sullivan subsequently provided an update just two hours after his initial announcement, in which he revealed that he and Williams are working together on his next steps.
‘What’s next? We’re working on it together with Williams Racing as a part of the academy, and let’s see what happens. But the support on here has been amazing to see just now. Thank you all.’
ART GP will announce O’Sullivan’s replacement in due course ahead of this weekend’s trip to Baku, Azerbaijan.
